Remember to be honest in developing your answer to this question, but diplomatically. And be specific enough to satisfy the interviewer, but not too specific to say too much, and a red flag will be raised.

What are the basic rules to answer why you want to leave your current job? We will deconstruct the parts of the answer. Use my POC formula to formulate your best answer:

  • P – Positive beginning
  • O – Objection free reason
  • C – Connect with the interviewer

P – Positive beginning

You always want to start on a positive note. Of course, you should never talk badly about your boss, your colleagues or your business because it will hurt you negatively. Concentrate on what you value from your current employer. As bad as any job, there are always lessons learned and positive conclusions to thank. Here are some examples that work in the worst circumstances:

“I have been there for five years and during that time I had the opportunity to…”
“I’ve enjoyed working there because I was able to learn…”
“I appreciated the opportunity to be exposed to…”
“It has been a valuable experience working there because…”

O – Objection free reason

You want to emphasize a reason why you do not object to your interviewer. Stay away from the reasons that interest you, such as "I want to make more money" or "I want to work fewer hours". Make sure that your answer is neutral and preferably focused on growth and opportunity. For example:

“…and now I would like to have the opportunity to do more [insert subject]…”

“…and I found that I really like [insert subject] and would like a position that is more involved with that…”
“…but because it is a small department I won’t have the ability to learn [insert subject]…”
“…but in order to grow I need to pursue other avenues in [insert subject]…”
